Sandy #7

"Sandy" is the oldest log canoe now racing. She was built in the 1860's from trees that were 150 years old at that time. During this period, Virginia 3-log canoes were brought north from Norfolk and used as models for building Chesapeake log canoes. "Sandy" was one of the boats built using these Virginia 3-log canoes as a template.

"Sandy's" history is sketchy until 1938, when Captain Boley Tyler purchased her. Tyler raced "Sandy" for the next 17 years in Miles River Yacht Club regattas, until 1955 when he sold her to Bill Hanlon. In his 80's when he sold "Sandy" to Hanlon, Capt. Tyler's main concern was that she would continue to be used as a racing boat. True to his word, Hanlon immediately entered her in the 1955 MRYC regatta. Bill Hanlon continues to race "Sandy" in regattas today.
